just a note about the ATM buses out of nuevo vallarta.....
if you are on the Mayan Palace/Allegro/Paradise Village "side" of nuevo vallarta and want to head into town, take the bus that says WALMART and avoid the ones that say "SAMBA". the samba buses double back into the other side of nuevo vallarta and add 30-40 minutesto the trip!
The ones that say walmart just go into the Veradero resort retorno and headright back out to the highway....much quicker!

Since its inception in 1989, Galeriá Vallarta has specialized in presenting all types of art, produced by talented contemporary artists as well as traditional artists. Tributo a mi amigo Peter Gray (1930-2008)

Artista, escritor, hombre de negocios y filántropo son palabras fáciles y apropiadamente asociadas con el nombre Peter Gray. Pero la palabra que me viene a la mente para Peter es amigo. Nos conocimos cuando le pregunté si estaba dispuesto a hacer y donar una pintura para el póster anual de Becas. Él rápidamente accedió y hubo una afinidad inmediata entre nosotros.
Al poco tiempo, presentó una maravillosa pintura: un vistoso caleidoscopio de globos, guirnaldas, luces y estrellas que enmarcan a niños y niñas bailando y cantando. Lo llamó "Dejen Bailar a los Niños" y nos encantó tanto a los miembros de Becas que lo usamos como el tema de nuestras Becas 1998, reproduciendo figuras de la pintura para decoraciones de mesa y pared. Como un tributo a Peter, Becas Vallarta reproduce aquel póster para emplearlo en nuestras Becas 2009.
Más tarde, Peter nos dijo que tenía una nueva pintura titulada "Pidiendo Posada", de la cual sentía que haría un gran impreso. Más adelante, Peter dijo que él y Buri deseaban donar los 500 impresos a Becas para venderse en diversas tiendas de Vallarta. Por supuesto, aceptamos su regalo y vendimos los 500 pósters, y muchos niños y niñas locales asistieron a la escuela ese año gracias a la generosidad de mi amigo Peter.
Peter y Buri continuaron apoyando a Becas y pronto se hicieron una parte integral de la fundación. Resultaron ser grandes adiciones a nuestro grupo, aportando ideas innovadoras y también llevándolas a cabo.
Su filantropía siguió con sus donativos a Becas Vallarta de todas las copias de su hermoso libro 2002 "Todo es Seguridad Rreunida," que se vendió como pan caliente y otra vez llenó los cofres, permitiendo a la gente más joven poder obtener educación.
Adicionalmente, fue un miembro activo de la Liga Naval, fundador de la magnífica galería de arte en el Centro Unviersitario de la Costa, apropiadamente llamada el Museo de Arte de Peter Gray, y realizó muchos actos de bondad anónimamente.
Peter nunca se dio cuenta de su importancia. Silenciosamente hacía su trabajo, nunca pidiendo tratamiento especial. Tenía tantas historias para contar y me encantaba escucharlas. Era una persona divertida. Era mi amigo. Lo amé y lo extrañaré mucho más de lo que puedo expresar.

A Tribute to My Friend Peter Gray

Artist, writer, businessman and philanthropist are words easily and appropriately associated with the name Peter Gray. But the word that always comes into my mind for Peter is friend. We met when I asked him if he would create and donate a painting for the annual Becas Ball poster. He quickly agreed to everything, and there was an immediate affinity between us.
Very shortly, he presented a wonderful painting: a colorful kaleidoscope of balloons, garlands, lights and stars framing boys and girls dancing and singing. He called it "Let the Children Dance," and the Becas members loved it so much we used it as the theme of our 1998 Becas Ball, reproducing figures from the painting for wall and table decorations. As a tribute to Peter, Becas Vallarta is reproducing that poster to use for our 2009 Becas Ball.
Later, Peter told us he had a new painting titled "Pidiendo Posada" that he felt would make a great print. Further, Peter said he and Buri wanted to donate the 500 prints to Becas to sell in the various shops in Vallarta. Of course, we accepted his gift and sold all 500 posters, and many local girls and boys went to school that year thanks to the generosity of my friend Peter.
He and Buri continued their support of Becas and soon became an integral part of the foundation. They turned out to be great additions to our group, coming up with innovative ideas and then helping carrying them out.
His philanthropy to Becas continued with his donation to Becas Vallarta of all the copies of his beautiful 2002 book "All is Safely Gathered In," which sold like hot cakes and once again filled the coffers, enabling more young people to get an education.
In addition to doing so much for Becas, he was an active member of the Navy League, founder of the magnificent art gallery at the Central University of the Coast, University of Guadalajara, appropriately named the Peter Gray Art Museum, and performed many acts of kindness anonymously.
Peter never felt his importance. He quietly went about his business, never asking for special treatment. Peter had so many stories to tell, and I loved hearing them. He was fun to be with. He was my friend. I loved him and will miss him more than I can say.

Carlos Guzmán: Coordinador de Bodas y Mercadotecnia en Le Kliff
“La vida es un día de trabajo y hay que aprovecharla”.
Carlos nació en Puerto Vallarta y por ello tiene bellos recuerdos de su niñez ya que tuvo la dicha de crecer al lado del mar en la playa de Mismaloya, pues sus padres tenían un restaurante a la orilla de la playa, por ello desde pequeño aprendió el negocio familiar.
“Crecí entre mesas y mariscos frescos, aprendí a nadar, a pescar, a bucear, a jugar futbol en la playa, tuve una niñez muy activa, de gran convivencia familiar y de muchos amigos que aún conservo”.
De joven fue deportista, corrió tras las olas surfeando en Punta de Mita, practica el futbol desde los 7 años, practicó bicicross y freestyle desde los 12 hasta los 25 años.
“Siempre me ha gustado el deporte, pero mi mayor pasión ha sido y es la música, tuvimos un sonido móvil mi hermano Marco y yo, aprendí a mezclar música desde los 14 años; actualmente colecciono y mezclo música en formato digital”.
Estudió administración en la Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, al terminar se integró de lleno en la operación del restaurante Le Kliff, en marzo de 1993, donde actualmente se encarga de la mercadotecnia, ventas y coordinación de bodas, un trabajo que le apasiona y disfruta con intensidad; además, participa activamente en un grupo de autoayuda de hombres y mujeres con problemas de abuso de alcohol y drogas.
“Mi familia es mi gran tesoro, llena de luz mi vida cada día, realmente soy un padre y esposo bendecido por tener a mis tres mujeres en casa, Mónica es un bastión en mi vida, madre ejemplar, una mujer guapísima, entera, luchadora y maravillosa esposa; mi fortaleza, mi fuente de inspiración realmente está en mi casa y son ellas, las amo”.
Su carácter y personalidad son aspectos importantes que le han servido para llevar con orgullo la imagen del restaurante de la familia, sin embargo, Carlos afirma que el éxito de Le Kliff se debe al gran equipo que hacen como familia.
Al preguntarle su punto de vista sobre el desarrollo del puerto dijo estar muy contento, considera que algunas cosas no se dieron de la mejor manera, pero recalca que el desarrollo era necesario e inevitable y que ahora nos corresponde aprovechar la oportunidad que tenemos al estar en este lugar.
“Los vallartenses somos gente bendecida por haber nacido en este hermoso lugar, gente trabajadora, llena de vida, de alegría que amamos nuestro puerto y que debemos tener la capacidad de unirnos y hacer de nuestro destino el más importante de México para el mundo”.

Carlos Guzmán: Wedding Coordinator and Marketing Manager at Le Kliff
“Life is a day’s work, and one must take advantage of it”
Carlos was born in Puerto Vallarta and has beautiful memories of his childhood, growing up alongside the ocean on the beach at Mismaloya, where his parents owned a beach restaurant and taught him the family business at a very early age.
“I grew up among tables and fresh seafood. I learned to swim, fish, scuba dive and play soccer on the beach. I had a very active childhood, with lots of family gatherings and lots of friends I still have today.”
As a young man he was active in sports, surfing in Punta de Mita, playing soccer from the age of seven, and enjoying cross country and freestyle cycling from the age of seven to 25.
“I have always enjoyed sports, but my biggest passion is for music. My brother Marco and I had a mobile DJ service, and I learned to mix music at age 14. I currently collect and mix digital music.”
Upon completing his degree in business administration at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, he immersed himself in the operations of Le Kliff in March 1993. He currently manages their marketing, sales and wedding coordination, a job that he truly enjoys. In addition, he is an active participant in a self-help group for those with drug and alcohol abuse problems.
“My family is my greatest treasure, filling my life with light each and every day. I am truly a blessed father and husband, having my three women at home. Monica is my pillar of strength, a model mother, a beautiful woman, a fighter and a marvelous wife. My source of inspiration is at home. It’s them; I love them.”
His character and personality are important assets; nonetheless, Carlos affirms that the success of Le Kliff is due to the great team that they lead as a family.
When asked for his opinion regarding the development of Puerto Vallarta, he indicated that he is quite happy but believes that some things were not carried out in the best manner, although the development was necessary and inevitable. Now, it’s our turn to take advantage of the opportunities offered in this wonderful town.
“We Vallartans are blessed just by having been born in this beautiful place. We are hard-working people, full of life and happiness, and we love our port. But we must unite and make our destination the most important in Mexico for the entire world.”

De pronto en algunos importantes cruceros de Puerto Vallarta comenzaron a surgir postes metálicos parecidos a los que utilizan los Voladores de Papantla en su ritual, aunque mucho menos altos. ¿Habrá acaso presentaciones espontáneas de una escuela infantil de este grupo folclórico?, se preguntaron algunas personas.
Todo comenzó con una serie de excavaciones en los camellones y banquetas. Con el sello de la casa -que siempre deja dudas sobre si los resultados superarán las molestias de una obra-, los trabajos de instalación de los postes resultaron molestos para peatones y conductores.
La Dirección de Obras Públicas, Seapal y Teléfonos de México, fueron los primeros sospechosos de estar de nueva cuenta abriendo las calles de la ciudad sin ningún aviso ni orden en los trabajos.
Al día siguiente, cuando comenzó la instalación de los postes, hubo quien pensó que se trataba de nuevas astas para la instalación de banderas, sin embargo, eran muchas, a menos que se pretendiera hacer de Puerto Vallarta la ciudad con más banderas en el mundo, la instalación resultaba excesiva.
Las versiones sobre el propósito de los postes se multiplicaron, cada persona que los veía tenía una conjetura al respecto: ¿bases de esculturas, nuevas lámparas de alumbrado, soportes para un teleférico?
Hace pocos días se despejó por fin la incógnita. El propósito: la colocación de videocámaras de vigilancia.
El presente año ha resultado totalmente atípico para la tradicional calma y tranquilidad de quienes vivimos en esta región del país. Desde mayo pasado y durante varios meses ocurrieron 17 tiroteos que incluyeron persecuciones por la principal avenida de la ciudad, lo que hizo necesario tomar medidas sin precedentes.
La llegada de refuerzos de la Policía Estatal, la colaboración con el Ejército de la Policía Federal y la realización de operativos policíacos en diferentes rumbos de la ciudad se volvieron hechos cotidianos.
Por su parte, el gobierno municipal respondió con otra medida de seguridad que consiste en la instalación de 48 videocámaras de vigilancia que estarán monitoreando las 24 horas los principales cruceros de la ciudad.
Profesionales de la desconfianza hacia las autoridades como somos los mexicanos, hay quien externa sus dudas sobre la utilidad de las cámaras. Sin embargo, otras personas consideran que pueden ser eficaces para identificar a los transgresores de la ley.
Esta medida se complementa con la habilitación de un área de monitoreo en la Dirección de Seguridad Pública, que estará pendiente de las actividades delictivas que puedan registrar estas cámaras, a fin de aportar videos que permitan la captura de presuntos delincuentes.
Aclarado el misterio de los postes, sólo resta esperar que su instalación valga la pena, de lo contrario, una amplia variedad de opciones para su utilización ya están a la orden.

A Rigorously Guarded Paradise

At some of the most important intersections in Puerto Vallarta, metal poles that look like the ones used by the Papantla Flyers show on the Malecon suddenly began to sprout up. But these poles were shorter. Some wondered if they could be for grade school children performing as a folkloric dance group.
It all started with a series of excavations along the center islands and sidewalks. Without any official notice, which always raises questions about whether the construction is really worth the trouble, the installation of the poles turned out to be quite bothersome for pedestrians and drivers. The Department of Public Works, Seapal and Telmex were the first suspected of once again tearing up the city streets without notice or work orders.
The day following the installation of the poles, some wondered if these were new flagpoles. But there were too many, unless they were attempting to turn Puerto Vallarta into the city with the most flags in the world. Speculation about the purpose of the poles began to grow, each person with their own guess: bases for sculptures, new street lighting, or light rail?
The mystery was resolved a few days ago; the poles are for video surveillance cameras.
This year has been a departure from the traditional peace and tranquility in this region of the country. Beginning in May, there were 17 shootings, which included police chases on city streets, prompting drastic measures; the arrival of additional state and federal police in town and the implementation of patrols throughout the city. The municipal government responded with their own safety measures, which involved the installation of 48 video surveillance cameras to monitor the main intersections of the city around the clock.
Mexicans have traditionally distrusted the authorities, and there are those who express doubts regarding the usefulness of the cameras; nonetheless, others feel they may be useful in identifying those who break the law. This measure includes the installation of a monitoring area in the Department of Public Safety, who will look for criminal activities captured by these cameras in order to obtain videos that will allow the to capture of suspected criminals.
Now that the mystery of the poles has been solved, all that is left is to wait and see if these cameras are worth the effort. If not, there are already a variety of options for their use.

Conciencia Ecológica - Semana por la Conservación

La Comisión Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (CONANP) es un órgano descentralizado que tiene como objetivo primordial conservar el patrimonio natural de México así como sus procesos ecológicos. En Puerto Vallarta somos afortunados de contar con algunas áreas protegidas, tales como el Parque Nacional Isla Marietas, el Parque Nacional Isla Isabel, Río Ameca y campamentos tortugueros de Nuevo Vallarta y Platanitos.
Por este motivo y con la vista puesta en crear conciencia ecológica en los niños y jóvenes vallartenses, la CONANP estará organizando del 27 al 29 de noviembre la Semana Nacional para la Conservación, evento que se lleva a cabo año con año a nivel nacional y que en Puerto Vallarta estará cumpliendo con su segunda edición.
El año pasado se llevaron a cabo diversas actividades en las localidades de influencia de las distintas áreas, culminando en el Parque Hidalgo, donde tuvo lugar el primer Rally ConserVAMOS con su respectiva premiación, así como obras de teatro, exhibición de aves, la presentación de las áreas naturales protegidas en la región, entre otras.
Este año se pretende superar lo hecho en 2007, por tal razón se realizará la Feria por la Conservación (FECO) que intenta ser un foro de convivencia, aprendizaje, diversión y, sobre todo, concientización. A esta feria también podrán integrarse los adultos.
Los temas que se abordarán durante este evento serán: arrecifes coralinos (año declarado por la CONANP), año internacional de la rana, año de educación física y el deporte, año internacional de la tierra, entre otros.
Cabe señalar que la Semana Nacional por la Conservación se lleva a cabo en diferentes fechas y localidades: 14 de noviembre en San Sebastián del Oeste y 22 de noviembre en Bahía de Banderas.

CONANP, the national commission on protected areas, is a decentralized organization whose main purpose is the conservation of Mexico’s natural heritage and its ecological systems. Puerto Vallarta is fortunate in having several protected areas, such as the Marieta Islands National Park, the Isabel Island National Park, the Ameca River, the Nuevo Vallarta turtle camps and Platanitos.
For this reason and to foster ecological awareness among the youth of Vallarta, CONANP is organizing National Conservation Week, November 27-29. This event is held every year across Mexico, and this is the second year for Puerto Vallarta.
Last year, several activities were held in various locations, culminating at Hidalgo Park for the first ConserVAMOS Rally and its awards. Other activities included theater productions, bird exhibits, and the presentation of protected areas in the region.
This year, the objective is to surpass what was achieved in 2007, presenting FECO (the Fair for Conservation), designed as a forum for learning, having fun and above all raising awareness. Adults are also welcome at this fair.
Topics to be addressed during this event will include coral reefs year (declared by CONANP), international year of the frog, year of sports and physical education, and international Earth day, among others.
Please note that National Conservation Week will take place on different dates at different locations: November 14 in San Sebastián del Oeste and November 22 in Banderas Bay.

CARTA EDITORIAL. COLUMNISTA INVITADO
El gobierno mexicano está tomando medidas contra la evasión fiscal por parte de extranjeros y ciudadanos que poseen condominios en México y no pagan impuestos por los ingresos de alquiler, ya sea en México o en los EE.UU. Ya era hora. El sentido común nos diría a todos que ellos deben el impuesto por estos ingresos a ALGUIEN... entonces no me tragaría un “yo no sabía” como excusa.
Pienso que este esfuerzo de Hacienda, junto con un balance al ya tan agotado mercado de condominios de los años recientes, devolverá un equilibrio más sano al mercado local de bienes inmuebles.
Durante muchos años, ahora, ha habido especulación excesiva en el mercado de condominios en Vallarta. Los precios en algunos desarrollos se han duplicado cada año. Esto ha sido abastecido por diversos factores:
° 1. Dinero de hipoteca fácil en Estados Unidos. Muchos compradores sacan hipotecas en su residencia en EE.UU. y pagan en efectivo aquí en Vallarta. Ahora sucede menos debido al colapso del mercado de bienes raíces en EE.UU. (y a propósito: el mercado aquí en Puerto Vallarta no ha sufrido un colapso en absoluto, se ha refrescado considerablemente, realmente un buen momento para comprar).
° 2. La perspectiva del flujo de fondos libres de impuestos en alquileres de vacaciones (no porque fuese legal, sino porque era fácil rodear los derechos tributarios). Esto está cambiando ahora.
° 3. La demanda abastecida por los jubilados o “prontos a retirarse".
#1 y #2 han conducido a exigir más que el suministro mismo durante varios años. Ahora, tenemos más suministro que demanda, porque los proyectos que se pusieron en marcha hace un par de años ahora están en el mercado. Los desarrolladores pensaron que tendrían grandes ganancias en 2006, así que comenzaron enormes proyectos de condominios. Estos proyectos tienen un tiempo de liderazgo de la tabla de mercado, pero no el mercado que estaba en 2006.
La especulación en el mercado local también ha dañado a la industria hotelera, así que no se han construido nuevas habitaciones de hotel en Puerto Vallarta en varios años. Para los hoteles, que tienen gastos más altos que un especulador de condominio que evade impuestos, se ha hecho imposible competir.
En una fuerte cobertura, el enorme número de condominios de alquiler de vacaciones ha conducido a bajar los precios (muy bueno para turistas a corto plazo, pero no una situación sana para la economía de Puerto Vallarta en conjunto). Para especuladores de condominio, los recientes precios bajos de alquiler no han sido lo máximo. Si ellos cubren las cuotas de condominios y comisiones de su manejo, y consiguen unas semanas de uso para ellos mismos. Y esto estaba bien porque ellos calcularon que se pondrían a mano cuando se vendiera la unidad. Con estas nuevas medidas enérgicas en ingresos de alquiler para evasores de impuestos sobre la renta, esto ya no sucederá.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR GUEST COLUMNIST
The Mexican government is finally cracking down on tax evasion by foreigners and citizens who own condos in Mexico (not only in PV) and pay no tax on the rental income, either in Mexico or in the US. It's about time. Common sense would tell anyone that they owe tax on this income SOMEWHERE... so I've never bought the "I didn't know" excuse.
I think that this effort by Hacienda (the Mexican tax authority), along with a cooling of the overheated condo market of recent years, will return a healthier balance to the local real estate market.
For a good many years, now, there has been excessive speculation in the condo market in Vallarta. Prices in some developments have been doubling every year (leading to “flippers,” a sure sign of a bubble underway). This has been fueled by several factors:
° 1. Easy mortgage money in the US... many buyers take out mortgages on their primary residence in the US and pay cash here in PV. That is now happening a lot less due to the collapse of the housing bubble in the US. ( and by-the-way: The market here in Puerto Vallarta has not collapsed at all... it has merely cooled considerably... a great time to buy, actually)
° 2. The prospect of tax free cash flow from vacation rentals (not because it was legal, but because it was easy to skirt the tax laws). That is now changing.
° 3. Demand fueled by retirees or soon-to-be-retired's.
Both #1 and #2 have led to more demand than supply for several years. Now, we have more supply than demand, because projects that got underway a couple of years ago are now on the market. Developers thought they'd make big profits back in 2006, so began some huge condo projects...these projects have a long lead time from drawing board to market... but the market not what it was in 2006.
The speculation bubble in the local condo market has also hurt the hotel industry... thus, no new hotel rooms have been built in Puerto Vallarta in some years. For hotels, which have higher costs than a condo speculator who is evading taxes, it has become impossible to compete.
In a nutshell, the vast number of vacation rental condos has driven down rental rates (great for short-term tourists, but not a healthy situation for the Puerto Vallarta economy as a whole). For condo speculators, recent low rental rates have not been a big deal. If they cover the condo fees and management commissions, and get a few weeks of use themselves. And that was OK because they figured they would at least make a killing when they sold the unit. With this new crackdown on rental income tax evaders, that's no longer certain.
