Ricardo Villaseñor - Founder and Secretary of Grupo Ecologista de Nayarit, A.C.

“A person who cares about ecology”

Ricardo was born in Tepic, Nayarit, and moved to Puerto Vallarta seven years ago for business. A Certified Public Accountant and graduate of the UAN, he is known not only for being active and enterprising but also for his deep love of animals, especially turtles.

“Turtles are gentle animals, defenseless and harmless. That’s why I admire them and am inspired to protect them.”

He has volunteered in the campaign to protect sea turtles for the past 15 years, having become interested in this issue when a turtle sanctuary on the beach at El Naranjo was abandoned. Launching a follow-up to the sanctuary with a group of like-minded individuals led to the founding of Grupo Ecologista de Nayarit, A.C. on September 17, 1997.

“My contributions to this cause are more of a hobby for me since it provides me with double satisfaction: I can help and it also relaxes me and relieve the stress of my work routine.”

His activities include organizing treks, patrolling the beaches at night, collecting nests, burying them in Styrofoam coolers, and recording technical data, among other things. This is always done with the utmost care, since they are required to report the activities to the authorities.

“This is a marvelous adventure that has allowed me to visit other places with sanctuaries. I have worked with biologists and national authorities, and have been able to attend annual conferences on marine turtles and their habitat.”

Ricardo is happily married and he has a beautiful daughter. He enjoys sports, especially tennis, which he plays frequently. His favorite places to enjoy with his family are the beaches at Punta Raza, El Naranjo, Mayto and Yelapa.

“I am able to share my time because I consider myself a very organized person. That is how I balance my life with what I enjoy doing, my home and my work.”

“Inherit the Wind” is Ricardo’s favorite film because it’s a masterpiece that tackles the issues of faith, religious tolerance and freedom of expression.

His favorite dish is anything that contains seafood and his favorite drink is guava-flavored water.

His current goal in this charitable endeavor is to work with children to promote awareness; it’s very important to make it clear that the consumption of turtle-derived products is not allowed.
