Lyric abstraction is expression, freedom and creative independence. It’s the color, the light; it’s this light that systematically flows from the depths of the image.
Although abstract art dates back to 1910, an era in which Kandinsky produced “The New Arch,” a new aesthetic revolution full of color emerged from artists who were not part of a movement or group at the end of World War II, breaking away from figurative art and geometric abstraction.
Abstraction was divided into two classes: cold abstraction (geometric abstraction) and hot abstraction (lyric abstraction). Lyric abstraction is expression, freedom and creative independence. It’s the color, the light. It’s this light that systematically flows from the depths of the image. All of this originated without any set theory. That is what’s extraordinary: the renderings emerged in a manner that was completely independent from everything else.
Alfonso Peña has found in lyric abstraction a natural way of expression. He uses substance and tactile textures of oil over canvas with a palette of primary colors. His work is influenced by his career as an architect. In his compositions, regular shapes such as squares and circles are fused with organic shapes, with ethnic symbols derivative of pre-Columbian cultures. His creative freedom is also the incorporation of text fragments, which offer a somatic significance as well as composition elements. He stands out for his use of primary colors over warm and neutral tones.
Alfonso Peña was born in Querétaro, México, in 1965. He received his education in Monterrey, México, where he studied architecture at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, graduating in 1987. Prior to establishing his career as an artist, Alfonso taught courses on the Theory of Color, Artistic Appreciation and Interior Design at the Instituto Profesional de Arte y Diseño, A.C. in Monterrey. Alfonso currently resides in Puerto Vallarta. A sampling of his work is on permanent display at Quadro Galeria de Arte.
