Perla Desiree Cuellar Herrera: Independent Protector of Animals
“A young woman who incessantly fights for the rights of animals”
Perla Desireé Herrera, a native of Puerto Vallarta, is the third of four siblings. She has worked as a hostess and entertainer at Blue Bay hotel and is currently completing her last semester toward her degree in Communication Sciences at Arkos University.
Her sensitivity and search for harmony among all living beings has made her a tireless crusader for animal rights. Since her adolescence, she has become increasingly involved, participating as a volunteer with an Animal Protection Agency and S.O.S Animales.
“From an early age, I have been involved with them, which brings me satisfaction, responsibility and an obligation to protect them, since they are defenseless and can’t speak or care for themselves the way we can.”
She adores all animals, but mainly cats, which she admires for their intelligence, astuteness and eye-catching colors. She is often misunderstood, sometimes to the point of argument, even among her friends, but this just strengthens her eagerness to help, using her own resources, along with her love for all living beings.
“If I see a sick dog or cat lying in the street or on the Cuale River Island, I immediately take it to the veterinarian to see if there is any hope. It almost always turns out positive. I have brought home newborn kittens that I bottle feed. They are like my children to me; I stay up to care for them, and this is something I really enjoy.”
Following long school days and her charity work, on the weekends she enjoys going to J&Bs and dancing to her favorite music, salsa. Going out with her friends is very important to her, so at least once a week she gets together with fiends at their home to share a meal or drink coffee. On special occasions, she enjoys her favorite food, carpaccio, and her drink of choice is vodka and cranberry juice.
She is quite the dreamer and enjoys fantasy, the Lord of the Rings trilogy her favorite films. “Animal Liberation” by Peter Singer is one of her favorite books because it’s the first modern masterpiece that addresses equality among humans and animals.
Her most important project is completing her degree and being able to use the media to encourage society to change its attitude regarding animals and take more responsibility with their own pets by vaccinating, spaying, neutering, and feeding them properly.
