MID SUMMER VALLARTA

Due to the nightly rains there are not too many outdoor events during this season, but it´s always sunny in the mornings until about 4 p.m. There will be a tennis tournament at Canto del Sol from August 4 to 10th.

Also on Saturday, August 23 you can enter the Second Annual Copa Gobernadores golf tournament being held at El Tigre golf course in Nuevo Vallarta for benefit of the Nayarit Assn. of the fight against cancer. For information call Jesus Carmona at 322-2970773 or email jcarmona@pvillages.com

Francisco San Miguel is showing his beautiful wood sculptures from now until August 15th at Plaza Galerias Vallarta (Liverpool) .
The show is entitled "Tribulations del Migrante". We get a lot of confusion about the name Galerias Vallarta, even to people showing up to apply for jobs at our gallery and many phone calls meant for the shopping center.

Galeria Vallarta, downtown at Juarez 265 will host a free cocktail exhibition on Friday, August 8 at 8 p.m. honoring Nacho Hernandez, from Guadalajara. Nacho has not shown in Vallarta for a number of years, his last show being at our gallery, and now he is bringing about 20 large oils featuring abstractions of female figures, bright paintings with emerging faces and more surprises that we haven´t yet seen. Nacho Hernandez graduated from the Esmeralda School of Art in Mexico City and has had exhibitions in Mexico, the U.S. Panama and Paris. If you are in town, please come by to meet Nacho and see his new works. The exhibition will continue for 2 weeks. The Westin Resort continues with the exhibition of the large scale canvases of tropical birds by José Moreno and abstract creations by Steve Fischer. The paintings are located in the passageway leading to the restaurant/bar. Stop by to see them when you
go to the Marina area.

Another sad loss for Vallarta was the passing of Bill Reed, a great author and 40 year resident and promoter of Puerto Vallarta. He collaborated with John Huston on the famous autobiography entitled "An Open Book" revealing the memories of the director of "The Night of the Iguana", the movie which made Vallarta famous. Bill Reed also wrote "A Mexican Oddysey" about his own adventures during his many years in Mexico, among many other books. One of our pioneers, he will be greatly missed.

VICTOR GUTIERREZ MONUMENT

The internationally renowned master of bronze sculpture, Victor Gutierrez of Mexico City, was commissioned by the Secretary of Tourism of the Federal District to create a replica of the monument "El Angel de Independencia" which is a landmark of Mexico City, located on Paseo de la Reforma. This huge statue was on exhibit in the Zocalo of Mexico City on July 23 and then shipped to Bejing, China as a gift from Mexico for the 2008 Olympic Games being held there. Victor Gutierrez has been represented in Puerto Vallarta by Galeria Vallarta for a number of years, and his exquisite bronzes of native Latin American women are favorites of collectors throughout the world.

A GROWING CITY

There are many comments now about the proliferation of high rise condos in Puerto Vallarta, changing the skyline, obscuring our natural beauty and all the problems arising for adjoining properties during construction, as well as the corruption of illegal building permits issued by past politicians, some of whom have been banned from serving in public office for 5 years. Our city is growing too fast, due to our great climate, our art and cultural events,
the friendliness of the people and our outstanding cuisine. There are so many developers that want to take advantage of selling as many condos as they can possibly fit on a small parcel of land in a growing city where so many people want to retire.

The city is proposing a new urban development plan which will be available for the public to check out until August 22 at Cty Hall. There have been no public meetings or conferences but the public has been asked to form an opinion. How they will voice this opinion has not been specified. Read the article on Urban Development Plan by Ron Walker in the current Vallarta Tribune to give you more information and if you live here, go downtown and see what they are up to.

What we really need is a plan for circulation of tourism in the entire central area so the stores on the inside streets will not have to close as they are now doing in increasing numbers due to lack of clients and due to the growth of more ambulante booths on the extension of the Malecon. Everything is centered on a single tourist strip along the Malecon, which is a great place for entertainment at night, but offers no real Mexican art or crafts, no gourmet restaurants, no art galleries, only big chain businesses who can afford the astronomical rents . We need permanent maps, attractive information signs and information booths that promote our great cultural events and are not selling time share. Let´s see if the plan includes any of these items. Also the city needs to find a way to stop the ugly graffiti that is increasing all over town, even on the newly painted facades of the restoration project for the centro historico.

To report problems and find a form to fill out about street flooding, sewer water, or any problems you encounter in our city, go to grupoecologicopv@yahoo.com.mx. You can complete and deliver it to Oceonologo Rafael García de Quevedo Machaín, subdirector de Medio Ambiente y Ecologico by email medioambiente.puertovallarta@gmail.com or the office is located at Calle Pelicanos 136 fracc. Los Sauces. or call 322-225-0678, x 108-113. Also please send your comments to my forum at www.vallartaonline.com: "About Living Your Dream".
