128 Carta Editorial Letter from the Editor In addition to a thriving and diverse Mexican community and popular tourist destination for some 50 years, Puerto Vallarta is increasingly becoming a retirement paradise or at least a winter residence for thousands of American and Canadian baby boomers now reaching retirement age and spending months or years here in the Bay area with much free time, ample financial resources and a lifetime of skills and experience. What this has meant for Puerto Vallarta at a community level is an increasing number of local charities and community organizations able to deliver more important and much needed services and community support than ever before. From Los Mangos Public Library’s literary and cultural activities to the life-changing children’s cleft palate program, sponsored by the International Friendship Club; from hundreds of cats and dogs rescued from the street, sterilized and adopted out every Saturday at Los Mangos Library by the SPCA & PEACE, to the hundreds of education scholarships awarded every year by Becas Vallarta; from RISE Children’s shelter in Vallarta, to Manos de Amor sheltering needy children in Bucerias, to Make a Wish granting wishes to terminally ill children, to ecological organizations like the Sociedad Ecologica de Oriente observing and protecting the area’s whales and sea turtles to Vallarta Botanical Gardens and the Orchid Society. This is of course a far from complete list or organizations and activities in the area. For more information about these organizations and many more please check out the free community organization listing at vallartaonline.com With so many worthy and wonderful causes backed by so many generous and capable people both Mexican and newcomers, no one should lack for an organization or facility to support, contribute to or participate in, sharing your skills and experience or resources. It is heartwarming to see so much community commitment to improving the lives of the helpless or less fortunate. But of course the needs always far outweigh the necessary people and resources so please, if you are not already actively involved in your community, consider how you can share what you are blessed with in abundance with those who are not. If you do not see a cause or organization here that connects with you, please let us know in what way you would like to contribute to improving or helping in your community, and we will do our best to match your interests or skills or available resources with a local need. I promise, you will receive in smiles and gratitude, that far more than you will ever give. Complete issues of Bay Vallarta are now available online at bayvallarta.com
