Many things about a famous restaurant are transmitted by word of mouth, and we had already received positive comments from a friend who visited Vallarta on business and who was quite satisfied with the food and service at Gilligan’s.
While strolling through the Marina, we came across this new restaurant located in the commercial area of the Marina Del Rey Condominium. The location is great, the music is pleasant, and the chalkboard announcing their specials definitely caught our attention. Gilligan’s opened very recently.
Our first impression was that of a happy and relaxing establishment, a place designed to spend quality time with family and friends, without having to spend a lot of money.
The afternoon was warm and as such we began by ordering beer. Along with the beer, we were also provided with a large complimentary plate of nachos, refried and glazed beans as well as pico de gallo salsa. Although nachos are not one of my favorite dishes, I must admit that these were rather enjoyable.
The menu is not very expansive, but it does contain a little of everything to please all tastes. For example, for appetizers you can choose from shrimp cocktails, chicken wings, fried calamari, cheese sticks or salads, and you may choose from the house salad or Cesar. All were reasonably priced and the portions were very generous.
Or you may choose to begin by ordering one of their Mexican delights such as fried chicken tacos, gorditas or burritos. The hamburgers prepared in several styles will satisfy any taste.
We decided to try the daily special consisting of a plate for two including lobster, catch-of-the-day fish, shrimp and an ample portion of New York steak. We ordered the lobster grilled as well as the fish and the garlic shrimp. I must mention that the dish exceeded our expectations. The lobster was very fresh and cooked to perfection as were the shrimp. The New York steak portion was also generous and was prepared exactly as requested. The meat was soft and juicy. In addition, fresh vegetables accompanied the plate.
We could not order any dessert so we ordered drinks to top off this experience, which turned out to please everyone.
Gilligan’s left a good taste in our mouths, and the anticipation of returning for a second visit.
