ART EVENTS

* The first Art Walk on Oct. 29th was well attended and everyone enjoyed the Day of the Dead Theme in all the galleries.

* On Halloween night the Malecon and downtown area was filled with costumed children seeking treats. The customs of the U.S. and Mexico have merged with Halloween and Day of the Dead back to back.

* Our second art walk on Nov. 5 at Galeria Vallarta was a Tribute to Frida Kahlo, featuring unique jewelry by Francine Boxer who lives in PV and in Washington state, as well as prints of Frida´s paintings and original interpretations of Frida by Susana Soto. Those attending received printed copies of Frida Kahlo´s favorite recipes which she served to Diego Rivero on Dia de los Muertos.

* Jean Pierre Renucci inaugurated his newly remodeled and much larger Galeria Corsica with new works by Jose Luis Cuevas, who has his own museum in Mexico City.

* Galeria Vertice had an opening on Nov. 7 for four outstanding Oaxacan artists--Mariano Pineda Matus, Virgilio Santaella, Israel Zepeda and Tomas Pineda Matus. Well worth a visit to see the exciting styles of these important Mexican artists.

* Nov. 12th at Galeria Vallarta will feature a newcomer to the PV scene--Genny Claro, born in Chile, but a regular exhibitor in San Miguel de Allende. Genny will be present with her realistic oils of native people, still lifes with copper pots and fruit and studies of churches and sanctuaries. The show continues until Nov. 25 and on Nov. 26th Galeria Vallarta will present "New Dimensions" by favorite local artist Steve Fischer. If you need a large format abstract painting, you will surely find it at this event.

MEXICO´S BUDDING FASHION INDUSTRY

Mexico City, the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere is acclaimed as the nation´s fashion capital. On Oct. 20 to 26th FASHION WEEK MEXICO celebrated it´s 10th anniversary with 30 shows in 6 days at Campo Marte on the beautiful Paseo de Reforma Ávenue. Mexicans are passionate shoppers and due to retail development around the capital city they are flocking to upscale malls and shopping centers, without a need to travel to the US to find their favorite brands and designers. Besides the major apparel manufacturers based in Mexico City, the established, classic designers and the cutting edge stylists now understand that the runway gets them vital media coverage and have become more business oriented. These forward thinking designers caught the eye of Intermoda, the only apparel fair in Mexico which is held in Guadalajara in January with 21,500 square feet of space dedicated to the latest fashions.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
